...In the latest edition of Juice Magazine (surf, skate, art culture) there's a very good interview with Mr. Hynson by his old teamrider Herbie Fletcher & his wife Dibi, who spend time together living, surfing ,& shaping on the North Shore in the late 60's / early 70's, developing the 'down rail' design...a design that subsequently filtered into the hands of Pipe lurkers G. Lopez, Rory R.,etc. , that in recent years Gerry has given much credit to Mike stating '...if it wasn't for the downrailer design, we'd never had been able to ride Pipe like we did...", or something like that. Gotto your nearest book & mag pusher & check it- KNOW YOU HISTORY!!

Sean sent these pics to me this morning from his latest trip, El Salvador. Looks as if he made it Shimbawa quiver exclusive this go-round...Shaper of shimbawa's, J. Belik, is an O.G. Sunset Cliffs local from the genesis of the fish board movement, shaping around the same circles as Lis in the early 70's, & was actually on da beach to see Jeff Ching's 1st standup ride on one of Lis' fish, it don't get more close to the source than that. Nice point, nice quiver, i'm jelious....

This is where we scored or best formed waves of the trip, Caldera Jetty, outside of the shipping port in Puntarenas. This 1st day was headhigh with bigger sets warping of the jetty & a-framing, 3 hour sesh with one other local kid out & me & my 2 buddies...this session made my trip. the next morning we D.P.ed the jetty to find it D.O.H. with barrels you could drive a caddilac thru, unfortuately it was a saturday & there was a contingent of 40 boogie's sitting on the peak, not letting us in...we sat off to the left of the peak & counted ourselves thankful of the session we caught there the day prior...

I didn't mind the size so much, it was the D.O.H. sneaker that would thump you(putting it mildly) on the paddle back out that I didn't care for...

...A couple of week's back, a 4-pack of Black Knight Quads came to me, packed lovingly by Mr. Mattison, & meant for 4 stoked out friends. Only one guy has had the chance to test his out, & judging by the giggling convo we had after his 1st session on it, he seemed a tad blown away. I will be stoked to surf my 1st sesh with all of them to see the looks on each of their faces after their first waves on these sleek machines. Here's a pic of my good bro Scott Jackson (a.k.a. Jacko), bugging out of his skin waiting for a decent swell to arrive so he can get this thing under his feet. This guy has always ripped hard on anything you throw at him, & I have a sneeky suspision he's going to be taking the roof off about anything he drops into on this thang....

When I come across people/surfers who actually have the deepest love for surfing & bring that across in their work or art...it makes me that much more proud to call myself a life long surfer. Nathan Oldfield is one of these people. I first came across Nathan's work in form of a film short called 'Making Noleni'. As I viewed it, I could tell there was more going on in the film than the process of shaping this quad fish...the moody music, the style in which it was filmed, really drew me in, & I found myself watching it many times over. Then on the website Swaylocks (shapers site), I saw one of the threads was Nathan's 'Making Noleni', & it was actually his personally tragic story of his & his wife's stillborn birth of their daughter, & the film was one of his ways in which to deal with the pain of his families loss. Now I was touched, saddened, but drawn yet further into his film. I urge you to check it out for yourself, though it's short, it's extremely powerful, especially after learning the story behind it. The Phoresia blog recently interviewed Nathan for his upcoming film 'Seaworthy', & links to his youtube site, as well as his personal site, http://www.freefilms.com.au/, are there, great interview as well. ...these are purty interestin'.....i dig the carbon cutaway keels the Rasta / DVS have done, but these are really nice. Marlin Bacon doing some 'keel-er' stuff with bamboo at 101 Fins. Wonder how this feels, they say bamboo fins have rad flex charateristics as it is, add the cut-away aspect & man...sling shot pocket rocket i'm thinking...pics / board compliments of Ian (must be a cool guy, he's got my son's name) @ Rip Shred Lacerate bloggy....nice work Ian...godd stuff.

...Saw these a couple of issues ago in the Surfers Journal, although these particular pics were poached from my fellow eastern seaboarders Shipworm and Gribble. Apparently these lil' tail-rail sidebite fins carry the board faster(?) through cutbacks while laying it on the rail. Skip & the hydrodynamica crew around the La Jolla area have been playing around with them for a little while, but if I remember correctly from the article, they weren't pushing to mass produce 'em...pity...they look interesting...

...Not only do I love surfing & it's rich history, but just as the blues gave birth to rock & roll, so did surfing do to skateboarding...& I love it as well. I got back into skating approx. 10 years ago, to kinda crosstrain for surfing when the waves weren't decent. Started back to the park I grew up going to as a grom, Kona skatepark, which is actually the oldest park still standing from the 70's. Now I ride a number of shapes, mostly pool type decks, older 70's / early 80's shapes. The o.g. artist / rider for the Z-Boyz & starter of Dogtown skates after that, Wes Humpston, has a company today called Bulldog Skates. Alot, if not most of his boards are templates from yesteryear, as well as older, bigger wheel molds. His company enjoys a great following of riders, most that rode his products when they were kids, & now ride his new stuff for the 'feel', as most of the people riding his equipment aren't 'kickflippers', but 'surf-style' bowl riders...carvers, like me. This march, i'm hosting th B.D.S. Kona Jam III, at the legendary Kona Skatepark, the 14th-16th. This draws like minded skaters from all over the southeast to camp in the park, skate together, talk story, & share boards / equipment....saturday evening(15th) there will be a 'crawfish / low country boil' in the park for all there...this is an awesome 3 days, if your in the area & love skating & skate history, this is not to be missed!

...yep, it looks like finally, after a couple of year's trying to get one going in the sunshine state, we're gonna have one! details are still pending, but here's what I can share so far...structure for the event is being handled by one of the main architects for the hugely successful California fish frys, Sean Mattison, in conjuction with master shaper Ricky Carroll, as well as visiting legend Mike Hynson,plus i'm sure many more. Locations from south to north florida have been thrown around, but if all goes as planned, somewhere centrally located will most likely be settled on, Ponce Inlet is in contention as of now. This is set up to be a low key, un-corporate event, much like a regular family outing to the beach, bring your own food / drink, so we avoid city / county red tape. I will be giving info as plans progress, but this really promises to be a jewel of a event...great time of the season, great break, great boards, surfers, shapers...target date is the weekend after Labor Day(sept. 6th or 7th), as this event will lead into the following week to the ASR Surf Expo...Get stoked & stay tuned afishianados..

...Well, the Expo, as usual, was a experience to be sure. Alot of nonsense with BigWig clothing companies going all out, blasting music...alot of it really has nothing to do with 'real' surfing...but I also met alot of good people (Ricky Carroll & crew) that really give a crap about surfing & where it's headed. All & all I had a great time & I imagine i'll do my best to be at the one in september. Can't forget who got me there, thanks to great guy Sean Mattison, & the real life 'Big Z', the always legendary Mr. Michael Hynson.

..bouncing around da intragrid, i saw this ad for a new motion pic coming out. These guys we're the stars of the surfing world at the time i thought i'd give surfing a chance, since i was to puny & uninterested in 'team' sports. Little did I know how a plastic lil' board would (& still pretty much does) consume my life. I had these guys plastered all over my room, filling my head with illusions of watery grandure, along with every other grommet who paid 2.00$ at the 7-11 along with their slurpee in a baseball helmet cup. Now they're releasing a documentary of these days gone by called 'Bustin' down the Door'. Trailer looks promising, seems like everybody's using Stacy Perelta's template for doc film making, but hey, if it works I guess....check the trailer/site for warm memories of childhood pre-stoke...

Surf Expo '08...

...Well, i'm off tomorrow to the circus of legends, pros, kooks, & everything in between known as the Association of Surf Retailer's Surf Expo. It's held twice a year, & this one apperantly is the biggest one they've held so far. I admit it's an electric atmosphere, & though i've been a couple of times before as a struggling company's art guy, this time I get to hang with some true bigwigs in the 'industry'. So, friday & saturday I get to loiter around Ricky Carroll's (east coast shaping legend) company's booth, thanks to Sean Mattison(ex-surf star, now self employed magic board seller) & Endless Summer legend Mr. Michael Hynson. I'll try to take lots of pic's of me looking like I fit in & know people & surf stars that, of course, i do not.....
